NFR Adds Record 23.7 MWp Solar Capacity, Leads Indian Railways in Green Energy Expansion

Guwahati: The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has recorded the highest addition of solar power capacity among all zonal railways of Indian Railways, adding 23.7 MWp between January and July 2026.

With the latest installations, NFR’s total installed solar power capacity has increased to 42.1 MWp, strengthening its renewable energy infrastructure across various divisions and units.

Lumding Division, including the Guwahati portion, has emerged as the largest contributor, with a cumulative solar capacity of 17.7 MWp. Rangiya Division follows with 9.6 MWp, while Alipurduar, Katihar and Tinsukia divisions have also expanded their solar installations.

The shift towards renewable energy is also helping NFR reduce its electricity expenses. During 2025-26, the railway generated around 114 lakh units of solar electricity, resulting in savings of approximately Rs 8.6 crore in energy costs.

This marks a significant improvement from 2024-25, when NFR generated around 60 lakh units of solar power and saved nearly Rs 4.4 crore.

NFR’s solarisation drive is set to expand further, with another 9 MWp of capacity currently under implementation. Major upcoming projects are planned in the Lumding, Rangiya, Katihar and Alipurduar divisions.

NFR began its solarisation programme in 2011 as part of efforts to reduce its dependence on conventional sources of energy. The continued expansion of solar power is expected to help the railway cut carbon emissions while reducing long-term energy costs.

The latest expansion also contributes to Indian Railways’ wider renewable energy push and its goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions.
