Civic Body Poll Results Will Be 'Opposition-Free': Kalita

Guwahati: State Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) unit president Bhabesh Kalita has predicted that while his party will gain the majority of wards in the municipal board elections, which will be held on March 6, the results will witness the absence of Opposition candidates among winners.

Talking to the media on Friday, Kalita said that the BJP is contesting in 976 wards with its allies in 80 municipal boards across the State and "we have already won 61 seats uncontested."

Kalita said that he visited various towns during the election campaign and the results of urban development measures taken by the BJP-led Government in the last six years were there for all to see.

"There was praise for the BJP Government everywhere for its multifarious development and welfare activities," he said.

Kalita said that the BJP was asking for votes so that it could accelerate the pace of urban development in the time to come and ensure speedy modernization and development of these areas.

Kalita said that he foresees an Opposition-free result because the Congress is finding it difficult to find candidates to contest the civic body elections.

"The Congress is not only alienated from the public, but it has lost its organizational base as well," he said.

Kalita said that it is a matter of shame that India's oldest political party has now lost its relevance. The other Opposition parties exist only in the media and not in the political arena, he added.
