BOKO: Deputy Commissioner of Kamrup District Deba Kumar Mishra visited the Vulture Conservation Breeding Centre (VCBC) at Rani on Tuesday. He was accompanied by the chief executive member of Kamrup Zilla Parisad, Siddhrtha Goswami; Renu Deori, block development officer; Rani; and Roji Barman, forest range officer, Rani.

The DC was briefed about the activities of the Vulture Centre by Sachin Ranade, Scientist, BNHS (Bombay Natural History Society). He was shown the two species of vultures, viz. the slender-billed vulture and the white-rumped vulture. Both species are nesting and currently have small chicks to tend.

Sachin Ranade said that the Vulture Centre was started in 2007 to save these two critically endangered species from extinction. So far, the vultures have bred successfully and given birth to more than 80 young vultures.

Ranade emphasized that plans are undertaken to initiate the reintroduction program for these birds to the wild. It was suggested by the guests that a proactive program should be undertaken to initiate a vulture restaurant in Kamrup. In this programme, the livestock carcasses and road accident cases of animals could be put in a designated location. Vultures would feed in such locations. It would be a win-win situation for wildlife as well as for villagers. The vultures would get safe food, and the villagers would save their effort to bury animals. This way a natural balance would be restored.

Meanwhile, DC Deba Kumar Mishra expressed his satisfaction and advised a district-level meeting to advance the process.
