Guwahati: A major cross-border vehicle fraud has come to light, leaving several self-driving car owners in Guwahati and other parts of Assam in serious distress. Multiple vehicles rented for self-driving purposes have reportedly been taken across the India-Nepal border and illegally mortgaged for cash.
The prime accused, identified as Somnath Mukherjee from Kolkata, allegedly rented several vehicles from Guwahati-based owners under the guise of personal use. However, instead of returning the cars, he is accused of smuggling them into Nepal and pawning them at various locations.
Authorities have revealed that Mukherjee carried out similar fraudulent operations in West Bengal as well. Following coordinated intelligence-based operations, several of the vehicles from Assam have been traced and recovered from different parts of Nepal.
Acting on credible inputs, Chandmari Police in Guwahati initiated a joint operation near the Indo-Nepal border to track the missing vehicles. Meanwhile, West Bengal Police arrested Somnath Mukherjee along with four of his accomplices, who are believed to be part of a larger scam network.
Mukherjee is currently being interrogated at Pradhan Nagar police station in West Bengal as investigations into the cross-border racket continue. Authorities are now working to identify more victims and retrieve remaining stolen vehicles.
