Guwahati: In a first-of-its-kind initiative aimed at boosting entrepreneurship and creating alternative business opportunities, the Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC) launched the "Rhino Food Xpress" at the Inter-State Bus Terminal (ISBT), Betkuchi, Guwahati. The innovative programme, which repurposes decommissioned buses for commercial use, was inaugurated by ASTC Chairman Pallab Lochan Das in the presence of dignitaries, officials, and staff.
The "Rhino Food Xpress" initiative allows entrepreneurs to lease non-operational buses and transform them into food trucks, pharmacies, private chambers, and other business ventures. Speaking at the event, ASTC Managing Director Chinmoy Prakash Phookan highlighted the project's focus on fostering entrepreneurship, generating revenue for ASTC, and creating sustainable income opportunities for individuals across Assam.
The programme offers a five-year lease for interested entrepreneurs, who will pay a monthly rental fee to ASTC. Around 60 buses, which are no longer viable for transport services, have been identified for this initiative across various districts. The branding of the initiative features the iconic Rhino logo, symbolizing strength, resilience, and innovation.
In his address, Pallab Lochan Das emphasized the importance of the initiative in promoting innovative business solutions and urged widespread participation. He expressed gratitude to Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma and Transport Minister Kesab Mahanta for their support in making such forward-thinking projects possible. Das also outlined ASTC's broader vision, including the introduction of electric buses as part of ongoing pollution control measures and efforts to improve public transport services across the state. "We are committed to restoring ASTC's former glory by embracing innovation and sustainable practices," he said.
The first entrepreneur to benefit from the Rhino Food Xpress initiative, Juritora Saikia, was honoured at the event. Saikia, who also runs a skill development institute, shared her excitement about the opportunity, setting a precedent for others to follow. Her involvement demonstrates the potential of this initiative to empower local entrepreneurs and stimulate economic growth.
