GUWAHATI: The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Assam has foiled an attempt of cybercriminals to loot money fraudulently.
On November 17 at around 5 pm, a complaint was received from a victim about online fraud of Rs 20 lakh at the Citizen Financial Cyber Fraud Reporting and Management System 24x7 helpline number 1930 of CID Assam. The fraudster looted the money in the name of giving his ward admission into the MBBS course in the DY Patil Medical College, Pune. On receipt of the complaint, the CID,Assam, swung into action and contacted the bank nodal officers concerned over phone and email and alerted them to trace the amount.
The CID was able to trace and freeze Rs 20 lakh in the account of the fraudster. Due to timely action of CID, Assam, the fraudster was not able to misappropriate the money. Necessary legal action is being taken to refund the amount to the victim.
CID, Assam has appealed to people to stay alert and not to fall prey to such cybercrimes. People should verify the educational institute thoroughly before transferring any amount for admission. If anyone is a victim of financial cybercrime, they should call 1930 and also lodge an FIR in the local police station.
