GUWAHATI: The Directorate of Secondary Education (DSE) has set up an Academic Assessment Cell to monitor various Government and provincialized secondary schools in the wake of many such schools faring exceedingly poorly in the recent High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) examination. The cell will monitor 4,352 Government and provincialized schools across the State.

The motive behind constituting the cell is to ensure that the performance of students of these schools shows improvement in the coming days.

Meanwhile, the Assam High School Teachers' Association has welcomed the step taken by the DSE. The association said that the poor performance of Government and provincialized schools in the recent HSLC examination is unfortunate and does not bode well for the State.

The association also welcomed the DSE's step of issuing show-cause notices to the heads of those schools which registered pass percentages in the 0-10 bracket. The association admitted that some teachers do not have the interests of their students at heart and work as teachers out of compulsion. The association appealed to such teachers to work with a spirit of sacrifice so that the standard of education improves in Government and provincialized schools.

The Assam Secondary Teachers and Employees' Association has also welcomed constitution of the special cell by the DSE. The association said that such a cell is necessary to resolve the various problems of the secondary education sector. They expressed the hope that the cell will bring about improvement in the standard of education and have a far-reaching impact on the performance of Government and provincialized schools.
