Elephant calf dies after falling into a mud pit in Rani area of Guwahati

GUWAHATI: A one-month-old wild elephant calf died after falling into a mud pit in the Rani area on the outskirts of Guwahati yesterday.

The calf might have met the tragic end after it had come out with a herd of elephants from the nearby Rani Reserve Forest. Locals said that the calf could not come out of the muddy pit as it was young, and others in the herd failed to pull it up.

It was the second such incident in the area located along the Assam-Meghalaya border. Earlier, an elephant calf died a few months back.
