GUWAHATI: The Assam State Primary Teachers' Association (ASPTA) has set a 15-day ultimatum for Education Minister Dr. Ranoj Pegu to keep his assurance on the creation of headmasters' posts in primary schools, failing which the ASPTA will resort to agitation.

The State Cabinet decided to create headmasters' posts in the primary schools of the state on August 2, 2023. However, the Education Department has not yet implemented the Cabinet decision as yet.

A letter to the education minister signed by ASPTA president Nilakshi Gogoi and Secretary General Ratul Chandra Goswami said, "We have been raising the demand for the creation of the posts of headmasters in primary schools in the state since 1982. With our demand falling on the deaf ear of the government, we have started a serial agitation from May 2, 2023. We called off our agitation after the state cabinet decided to create the posts of headmasters in primary schools on August 2, 2023. Education Minister Dr. Pegu assured our association at its Hailakandi conference on July 25, 2024, that the government would create the posts of headmasters in primary schools within August 2024. However, the cabinet decision is yet to see the light of day."

The ASPTA wrote a separate letter to Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa seeking his intervention into the issue and ensuring that the Cabinet decision is implemented soon, besides meeting other demands of the teachers.
