GUWAHATI: A bike lifer, Dibyajyoti Saikia alias Babu, sustained a bullet injury that he had received when the police shot at him at 13 Mile in the Jorabat area on the night of February 4.

According to DCP, East, the Basistha police arrested three bike lifters-Ajay Singh, Dipu Terong, and Dibyajyoti Saikia-from the Six Mile area in Guwahati yesterday. The police took Ajay Singh and Dibyojyoti to 13 Mile, where the duo was supposed to show the police their hideout. "However, when they reached a jungle area, some people started pelting stones at the police, and taking that advantage, Dibyajyoti attempted to flee. The police then fired in the air and shot at Dibyajyoti," the DCP said.

The police recovered two stolen bikes and a master key from the site. The police suspect that the people who pelted stones at them were gang members of the bike lifters.

The DCP said that Dibyabyoti attempted to attack the police with a machete during his arrest yesterday. The gang is involved in several theft cases, the DCP added.
