Guwahati: The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has announced that it will discontinue its water supply services in areas already covered by the Jal Board’s water supply scheme under the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA)-assisted water supply project. The transition will take effect from July 1, 2025, as per an official notification issued by the GMC.

To facilitate a smooth transition for existing GMC consumers to the Jal Board’s services, the municipal body had earlier been subsidizing connection charges, bearing costs up to Rs 7,000 per connection for all its consumers, including ration card holders. However, in a significant move aimed at ensuring a faster migration process and minimizing inconvenience, GMC has now announced that it will cover the entire cost of Rs 9,500 per connection for all consumers who apply for a Jal Board connection on or before June 30, 2025.

The GMC has urged all residents in affected areas to avail themselves of this scheme before the deadline to avoid disruptions in water supply post the discontinuation of its services. This transition is part of the city’s broader efforts to modernize its water distribution system under the JICA-assisted water supply project, which aims to provide better, more sustainable, and efficient water supply services to the people of Guwahati.
