GUWAHATI: State Agriculture and Excise Minister Atul Bora has taken decisive action in response to widespread public outcry and media reports concerning the approval of a liquor outlet near Gauhati University. The minister announced on Sunday that he has instructed the Excise Department to immediately suspend the licence granted for the establishment of the liquor outlet.
Addressing the issue on the social media platform X, Bora acknowledged the growing backlash over the granting of an Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) ‘On’ licence in close proximity to the prestigious university. He emphasized that although the licence was issued in accordance with existing Assam Excise Rules, the sensitivities surrounding the matter could not be ignored.
“While the licence was granted by the Excise Department in accordance with existing Assam Excise Rules, keeping in mind the sensitivity of the matter, I have directed Commissioner & Secretary Rakesh Kumar and Commissioner of Excise Jitu Doley to keep the licence on hold until further notice,” Bora stated in his post.
The decision comes after mounting concerns from students, university staff, and local residents who argued that allowing a liquor outlet near a prominent academic institution could disrupt the educational environment and pose safety risks for students.
Despite the legal validity of the licence, Minister Bora’s intervention highlights the need to consider public sentiment and the broader social impact of such decisions, particularly when they affect educational zones.
The minister’s prompt response has been met with widespread approval. Many stakeholders have urged the government to conduct a comprehensive review of the regulations governing the location of liquor establishments, especially in the vicinity of schools and universities, to prevent similar controversies in the future.
