Guwahati: NABARD reaffirms commitment to rural empowerment

GUWAHATI: The Assam Regional Office of the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) celebrated its 44th Foundation Day with a special felicitation ceremony, paying tribute to grassroots champions who have made significant contributions to rural development across the state.

In a programme held at the NABARD office premises in Guwahati, three distinguished rural innovators—Padmashri awardee Sarbeswar Basumatary, renowned seed keeper Mohan Chandra Bora, and Assam Gaurav awardee Upendra Rabha, a pioneer in black rice cultivation—were honoured for their pioneering efforts in uplifting rural communities and promoting sustainable agricultural practices. The event was graced by Atul Bora, Minister of Agriculture, Government of Assam, as the chief guest. The ceremony witnessed the presence of senior government officials, bankers, stakeholders from the development sector, and representatives of Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs) and Primary Agricultural Credit Societies (PACS). Speaking at the event, Qamar Javed, General Manager, NABARD Assam RO, reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to rural empowerment. “NABARD remains committed to empowering rural Assam by nurturing institutions that serve as the backbone of our agrarian economy. Through collaborative efforts, we aim to create resilient and self-reliant rural communities,” he said.

As part of the celebrations, several high-performing FPOs and PACS were also felicitated for their exemplary work in strengthening the state’s rural economy. The event underscored NABARD’s enduring mission of “Taking Rural India Forward,” celebrating its legacy of four decades in fostering inclusive and sustainable development throughout rural India.
