Guwahati: ‘Save Guwahati Build Guwahati (SGBG)’, a citizens’ organization that has been actively advocating for the rights and concerns of Guwahati and Assam residents for nearly four decades, has appealed to the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) to extend the deadline for property tax payments.

While talking to media, the organization’s president, Krishna Baruah, and general secretary, Kailash Sharma, expressed concern over recent notifications circulated by the GMC through social media platforms. The notices urged city residents to clear their property taxes by March 31, 2025, warning that failure to do so would attract a 20% penalty and could even lead to property confiscation under Sections 188 and 189 of the Gauhati Municipal Corporation Act, 1971.

Baruah and Sharma stated that the notification has caused anxiety and fear among the public, as many citizens may struggle to meet the deadline. Highlighting the need for more time, they urged the municipal authorities to consider extending the deadline by at least two to three months to ease the burden on taxpayers.

The organization also appealed to Minister Jayantamalla Baruah, Guwahati Mayor Mrigen Sarania, and the GMC commissioner to take a positive and considerate approach in addressing public grievances related to the deadline. The leaders of ‘Save Guwahati Build Guwahati’ emphasized that a proactive and empathetic stance from the authorities would help mitigate the stress and uncertainty currently faced by the city’s residents.
