GUWAHATI: A delegation of the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) visited Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma at his office on May 20 and appealed not to conduct any eviction drive during this COVID-19 pandemic.
The appeal comes after; the state government conducted a massive eviction drive earlier this month in the char areas of Jamugurihat in Sonitpur district which left several homeless.
According to reports, a vast area of the government land to the southern part of Jamugurihat had been encroached upon by illegal encroachers and nearly 20 families have constructed houses on the government land illegally which was later evicted.
Submitting a memorandum to the chief minister, the AIUDF MLAs said that the people who are homeless are facing dire consequences and have become helpless in order to survive in this crisis situation.
Further the memorandum stated that due to the annual flood and because of landslides these people are bound to take shelter at the government lands and embankments in order to survive.
Although the government in past several years has conducted such drives but till now no concrete solutions have come up in gauging the plight of the people.
The MLAs also urged the chief minister to rehabilitee these homeless people and sought for a positive approach.
The AIUDF MLAs was led by Hafiz Bashir Ahmed, deputy leader Aminul Islam, Hafiz Rafiqul Islam among others from the party.
