GUWAHATI: The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC), along with the city police, on Wednesday launched a massive drive against the use of plastic below 75 microns at the Saukuchi weekly market.

Many plastic bags were seized during the operations. The GMC authorities have warned the shopkeepers not to use plastic and also warned that fines may be imposed on them for not abiding by rules.

The GMC has been launching seperate drives against the use of plastic in various markets of the city after the Centre announced ban on single use plastics.

According to sources, another drive against use of plastic will be held at Garchuk on Saturday.

Meanwhile, a joint drive was carried out by the Health and Enforcement branches of the GMC in association with the District Tobacco Control Cell, Kamrup (M) and Assam Police against selling of tobacco products around educational institutions.

The drive was carried out near the NERIM Group of Institutions at Jaya Nagar, Beltola College, Gauhati Commerce College at Chandmari and Icon Academy at Rajgarh Road. During the drive, all tobacco products from the shops operating within 100 yards of these educational institutions were seized and fines to the tune of Rs 4,000 were imposed.
