GUWAHATI: Dr. Pratap Jyoti Handique, Vice Chancellor of Gauhati University, sent a message to the student community of the university on July 13 stating that a detailed work plan and optimization of the examination procedure for the students of the university has been underway.

"The primary objective of Gauhati University at this moment is to complete the ongoing semesters and allow the students to progress towards their academic objectives. Considering the present situation, GU has decided to carry out the examinations and other academic activities on the basis of the recent UGC Guidelines [29.04.2020], UGC Revised Guidelines [06.07.2020], and UGC Standard Operating Procedure [08.07.2020]".

Mentioning the concern of the students about the online exam, the VC said, "I would like to mention that, an exclusive and student-friendly procedure is to be implemented at GU so that maximum benefits can be assured to the students. GU will implement a mixed procedure of examination and may give only a marginal weight to the online mode. A detailed procedure and calendar of the examination will be published immediately on completion of the ongoing lockdown in Guwahati".

"GU plans to complete all examination procedures by September 30, 2020. I would like to request the students to go for the filling up of examination forms so that the number of students aspiring for promotion to the next semester/award of final degree can be assured. The date for filling up of form will be extended to facilitate all the students," the VC added.

The VC appealed to all the students of the university to support and extend cooperation.

Meanwhile, in talking to The Sentinel, Moon Talukdar, general secretary of the Post Graduate Students' Union of Gauhati University said, "The Vice-Chancellor did not mention about classes. In the current scenario, online classes cannot be the way for all the students to sit in the exams. This will be a discrimination for the students who did not have a smartphone or having mobile network issues.

"Now the situation in Guwahati is not good, so I appeal to the VC before conducting exams to take offline classes when the situation becomes normal and completely safe for students. Now the situation in society and the mental health of the students is not very good and not friendly for facing exams in any methods."
