GUWAHATI: Leader of Opposition Debabrata Saikia demanded the government inquire into the allegation made by two ministers that 'the AIUDF had jihadi link'. Saikia also said the government should do all to foil jihadis raising their ugly heads in the state.

Talking to the media today, Debabrata Saikia said, "The Congress never support any power that poses a threat to the unity and integrity of India, nor does it support activities that are inimical to the state. Two former Congress prime ministers - Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi - were victims of terrorism. The erstwhile Congress governments at the Centre did take intelligence inputs seriously and conducted operations against terrorists. The BJP government should also tackle subversive activities with an iron hand."

He said, "Two ministers of the state alleged that the AIUDF had a jihadi link. This allegation needs a high-level inquiry. In 2014, the AGP-BJP combined levelled the same charges against the AIUDF. On October 22, 2014, the state BJP did send a letter to the then Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh to conduct an inquiry into the alleged AIUDF-jihadi link. Since the BJP levelled the same allegation again, a high-level inquiry is important."

Saikia also said, "In 2021, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma alleged that AIUDF president Badruddin Ajmal was running the party with funds received from fundamentalists abroad. This allegation also needs a high-level inquiry."

He said, "We will keep a close watch to ascertain that no innocent people face harassment in the name of operations against fundamentalists. The government should disclose the names, addresses and photos of the jihadis to make them known to the people."

He added, "The government should also make public a report on the subversive activities carried out by jihadis in the state and the measures taken by the government."
