Mae Dam Mae Phi celebrations in the city on Thursday

GUWAHATI: Mae Dam Mae Phi celebration was observed at Notbama Ren Chang Playground here in the city on Thursday. Tributes are paid to the Ahom ancestors on this day. Every year, Mae Dam Mae Phi has been religiously celebrated in Notbama Ren Chang. Lots of devotees visited and offered their prayers. Traditional cultural programme was also observed as people in traditional pusak graced the occasion.

People all over Assam observed the festival to offer tributes to the Ahom ancestors. People of all sections participated in the rituals in various places. Traditional offerings were made on the occasion as the Ahom community actively engaged in the festivities.

The word ‘Mae’ means offering, ‘Dam’ means ancestors and ‘Phi’ means Gods. So the word ‘Mae Dam Mae Phi’ means oblations offered to the dead and sacrifices to Gods.
