NEW DELHI: The Union Cabinet on Thursday approved the 'One Nation, One Election' Bill, which is expected to be introduced during the ongoing Winter session of Parliament, according to sources. The bill will be sent to the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) for further consideration.

The bill to enable simultaneous Lok Sabha and state assembly elections is a top priority for the government.

In September, the Union Cabinet approved the proposal based on the report submitted by a high-powered committee chaired by former President Ram Nath Kovind.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the proposal, stating, "The Cabinet has accepted the recommendations of the High-Level Committee on Simultaneous Elections."

"I complement our former President, Shri Ram Nath Kovind Ji, for spearheading this effort and consulting a wide range of stakeholders. This is an important step towards making our democracy even more vibrant and participative," PM Modi shared on X.

The high-powered panel proposed conducting simultaneous elections for the Lok Sabha and state assemblies in the first phase, with synchronized local body polls to follow within 100 days.

Meanwhile, previous month, the Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved a significant initiative to improve research and learning in India - One Nation One Subscription or ONOS. It has allocated Rs. 6,000 crore for 2025-27.

The project will provide seamless access for Indian students, faculty, and researchers in government institutions to essential international scholarly journals cutting across a host of disciplines.

The ONOS scheme will bring access to more than 13,000 e-journals of 30 international publishers to over 6,300 institutions under the Indian government and central research organizations.
