PUNE: A shocking video has emerged showing a 30-year-old man attacking his 28-year-old colleague with a cleaver in an office parking lot in Pune, Maharashtra.

The incident, which took place on Tuesday, has gone viral on social media. The footage captures the horrific assault unfolding in front of over two dozen bystanders, none of whom stepped in to intervene.

A blurry, one-minute video that surfaced online on Thursday captures the attacker calmly brandishing a cleaver before his colleague, identified as Shubhada Kodare, collapses to the ground, surrounded by a pool of blood.

Despite around 20 people witnessing the attack at the BPO where both the attacker and the victim were employed, none intervened to stop the assault.

It was only after the assailant discarded the cleaver that a few bystanders stepped in to subdue him. The absence of intervention from those present has ignited widespread outrage, highlighting issues of bystander apathy and raising serious concerns about workplace safety for women.

According to a report, Shubhada Kodare was allegedly targeted for refusing to repay money that the attacker, Krishna Satyanarayan Kanojia, claimed to have lent her under false pretenses. Shubhada succumbed to her injuries later on Tuesday at a private hospital. Kanojia has since been arrested, and an investigation is underway.

The National Commission for Women (NCW) has strongly condemned the murder of the woman in Pune, demanding swift and decisive action against the perpetrator. NCW Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar has reportedly written to Maharashtra's Director General of Police, Rashmi Shukla, calling for an immediate and comprehensive investigation.

The Commission has directed the state police to file charges against the accused and provide an Action Taken Report, along with a copy of the FIR, within 48 hours. The investigation revealed that Shubhada and Kanojia worked as executives in the accounts department of a BPO in Ramwadi, Yerawada, according to Additional Commissioner of Police Manoj Patil.

Around a year ago, Shubhada, originally from Karad in Satara, told Kanojia she needed ₹4 lakh for her father's medical treatment, which he lent her. Later, she informed him that her father would be undergoing surgery. However, when Kanojia visited her father a few days later as a goodwill gesture, he discovered that her father had no health issues.

Following this revelation, Kanojia demanded the money back, but Shubhada became confrontational and filed a non-cognizable offence against him three months ago, Patil explained. Despite Kanojia’s repeated attempts to recover the money, Shubhada avoided him and ignored his calls. "Frustrated and enraged, Kanojia came prepared and attacked her," Patil stated.
