GUWAHATI: In association with the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), the Railway Protection Force (RPF) has introduced a new system to help passengers report stolen or lost mobile phones. Passengers can now conveniently register complaints through the RailMadad portal or by calling 139, making it easier for those who do not want to register a formal FIR.
For those opting not to pursue an FIR, complaints can be registered on the Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR) portal. The RPF's zonal cyber cell will take charge of registering these complaints and subsequently blocking the devices to prevent unauthorized use.
According to a statement from the Railways, if a lost phone is detected with a new SIM card, the current user will be advised to return it to the nearest RPF post. The rightful owner must provide supporting documentation to reclaim their device. Where non-compliance is registered, the RPF has the authority to register an FIR and bring the matter to local police authorities.
The CEIR portal is a fundamental digital resource for recovering mobile phones via blocking, tracing, and managing stolen or lost phones. The project is an extension of the success of a pilot project in the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) in May 2024, which led to the recovery of several lost phones and the arrest of people involved in mobile snatching. With this countrywide launch, the RPF wants to improve the recovery process of railway travelers considerably.
