Prime Minister Narendra Modi Launches Mobility Card For Transportation Payments

Guwahati: Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the indigenously developed National Common Mobility Card (NCMC). The card has been launched to enable people to pay multiple kinds of transport charges, including metro services and toll tax across the country.

The card termed as 'One Nation One Card' would allow the holders to pay for their bus travel, toll taxes, parking charges, retail shopping and even withdraw money.

The Prime Minister launched the NCMC while inaugurating the first phase of the Ahmedabad metro train service. Modi also took a ride in the metro after inaugurating the first phase of 6.5 km stretch of Ahmedabad metro train service.

Launching the NCMC, Modi said that this card runs on RuPay card and it will eliminate all the travel related problems. "It seems that many people don't carry change to pay for the fare for which they face difficulties while travelling in metro, bus or train and also for toll and parking. To overcome this issue, an automatic fare collection system was introduced," Modi said adding that India used to import this system from foreign countries.

Modi further stated that since systems were made by different players, a card issued in one city did not work in another city and therefore the government asked various ministries, departments and even banks to resolve this issue.

People will also be able to withdraw money using this common mobility card and the RuPay Card could be used for travelling metros in any part of the country saying that the government has merged the RuPay Card with the mobility card.

With the advent of this indigenously developed and one of its kind card, the country is no longer required to be dependent on foreign technology.

Modi further said that now the card has been made 'Made in India' card and that only a few selected countries have this technology of 'One Nation One Card.'

It has been stated in an official release that the NCMC cards are bank-issued cards on debit/credit/prepaid card product platform.

It has also been mentioned that the stored value on card supports offline transaction across all travel needs with minimal financial risk to involve stakeholders and the service area feature of this card supports operator specific applications, for example- monthly passes, season tickets etc.

The Automatic Fare Collection System (AFC) installed at various metros are from foreign players and in order to avoid the vendor lock-in and create an inter-operable system there was a need to develop indigenous standards and AFC system under Make in India initiative.
