AGARTALA: Due to Tripura government's plan to impose a strict vegetarian food policy in the vicinity of the Tripura Sundari Temple, hotel and restaurant owners are experiencing uncertainty.
The state government plans to issue an administrative directive, making vegetarian meals mandatory for all establishments around the temple. Finance Minister Pranajit Singha Roy stressed that no illegal or unhygienic activities will be allowed near the sacred site.
The renovation work at the Tripureswari Temple is nearing completion, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate the newly upgraded complex. After the inauguration, the sale of non-vegetarian food around the temple will be fully banned. The district administration, in collaboration with the temple management, is expected to announce the policy soon.
Earlier this month, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi and invited him to inaugurate the redeveloped Tripura Sundari Temple, a prominent Shakti Peetha.
The Chief Minister highlighted the temple's cultural importance and its symbolic value for the state. The Tripura Sundari temple, built in 1501 by Maharaja Dhanya Manikya in Udaipur, is one of India’s 51 Shakti Peethas and the third in eastern India, after the Kalighat and Kamakhya temples.
The Union Tourism Ministry has sanctioned Rs 54 crore under the PRASHAD scheme for the temple's redevelopment, which is nearly complete. Additionally, a Rs 97.70 crore project has been approved to create a 51-Shakti Peethas Park near the temple in Banduar, enhancing the region’s spiritual heritage. This initiative aims to preserve and promote Tripura's cultural legacy
