292 crimes against children reported in Meghalaya

SHILLONG: Meghalaya witnessed around 292 reported cases of crimes against children till October this year. According to the Meghalaya Police website out of the total number of cases of crimes against children, 238 cases pertained to Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act 2012/IPC Sections 376, 354 and 509.

Under Sec 4 and 6 of POCSO Act and Sec.376 of IPC – which deals with rape there were 153 cases registered during this period. Under Sec.8 and 10 of POCSO Act / Sec.354 of IPC, 51 cases were registered during the same period. While four cases were registered under Sec.12 of POCSO Act / Sec.509 of IPC and 30 cases were registered under other Sections of POCSO Act.

From January to October 2018 there were 42 cases of kidnapping and abduction and there was one case of infanticide. It may be mentioned that in 2017 there were 360 reported cases of crimes against children out of which 298 cases were registered under POCSO Act 2012.
