Cyber Crimes, Drug Menace Concern for State Police: Meghalaya DGP

Shillong: Meghalaya Director General of Police (DGP) R Chandranathan in an exclusive interaction with The Sentinel admitted about the increasing cases of reported cyber crimes in the state followed by his expression of concern on drugs menace being a concern of the state police.

On being asked about the increasing cyber crime that have been consistently reported in the state, the DGP felt that the basic cause is the disruption of technology. “ Social media comes into play in different formats and this is the reason that we have updated our technologies and resources to thwart those who indulge in such crimes”, stated Chandranathan , even as he added that the police updatation with the technologies still has to go further with the realistic evolution of the technological and cyber world.

He said, “the total disruption of technology has made any information coming vertical instead of being horizontal”, a point that he ushered on how fake news,fake identity and other doctored unwanted elements comes into play. Uttering words that facts are secret that none can’t deny, the DGP categorically stated, “notwithstanding the technological disruptions, we are trying to reached every thresh hold of combating to the needs of time”.

Going by the official police records, the cases of cyber crimes have increased in the past two years. Again, the DGP referred to the evolution of technology that fails any combative unit .

On being asked about the purported Drug menace in Shillong and its adjacent area, the DGP said, “It is a concern”. Drugs from Myanmar are penetrating into the state through Myanmar via Assam. Although, the quality of the heroin is not of the high level, it’s the consumption by youths that makes the police force view it with concern.

The DGP in course of his interaction with this correspondent said that they are now dealing with the demand and the supply aspects. “On demand by the consumers, we have already tried to carry out, “a reach out exercise’ to the parents, the teachers, students of schools and to seek the intervention of the members of the civil societies.” morever, the DGP was in moral flair to assert that the family affected by people into drugs should not stay in a stage in denial.
