ITANAGAR: Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu on Monday reaffirmed his commitment to turning Itanagar into a modern, well-planned capital as he laid the foundation stone for phase-II of the government housing redevelopment project.

The new phase will cover B-Sector, C-Sector, P-Sector, and Niti Vihar.

Recalling the May 31 inauguration of the A-Sector multi-storey complex, Khandu said the initiative marked the start of replacing unsafe, outdated buildings with safe, comfortable housing.

“Our vision goes beyond government quarters, affordable, earthquake-resilient, and dignified housing for all is our priority,” he said, warning encroachers of government land and property that none will be spared.

The phase-II project will replace 42 dilapidated type-III quarters with 116 modern flats, 48 type-II units, 66 type-III units, and 2 type-V units. The G+3 buildings will feature ground-floor parking, seismic-resistant design, landscaped green areas, better waste management, and secure compounds to encourage community living.

With a budget of Rs 80 crore, the project is being executed by the Urban Development department and is slated for completion by April 30, 2027.

Urban Affairs Minister Balo Raja underscored the urgency of protecting government land during redevelopment, proposing more posts to guard all 33 sectors of the Itanagar Capital Region and a dedicated housing directorate to manage government housing across the state.

He also called for strict quality control in construction and firm action against encroachment by government staff.

Urban affairs commissioner Vivek Pandey noted that phase-II will not only improve living standards but also curb illegal land occupation, boost land-use efficiency, and create land banks for future expansion.
