Arunachal Pradesh: Month-long expedition of team NIMAS successfully completed, sets National Record

The expedition by NIMAS was led by Colonel Sarfraz Singh which had begun on November 22 and completed seven phases of Arunachal river rafting on December 23.

Itanagar: Team of National Institute of Mountaineering & Allied Sports (NIMAS) has successfully completed their month-long expedition on December 23, covering all the major seven rivers of Arunachal Pradesh.

The team was led by Colonel Sarfraz Singh. The expedition had begun on November 22 and is comprised of 10 local youths of the state and 15 army personnel from NIMAS.

The aim of the expedition was to explore parts of Arunachal Pradesh thought the tributaries of Brahmaputra and to promote adventure tourism in the state.

It was also in the line with Central Government Fit India Movement.

The expedition by NIMAS has set a National Record by covering a total distance of 720 km on seven rivers- Kameng, Dibang, Nao-Dihing, Lohit, Subansiri, Siyom and Siyang.

The highly skilled rafting team of NIMAS had covered more than 300 rapids which included 27 grade V, 41 grade IV and 98 grade II plus rapids. There was a large number of stretches on these rivers where were attempted for the first time by the team.

After this record-breaking expedition team, NIMAS Dirang is going to launch the first Winter Trekking Expedition on the famous Bailey's Trail in the month of January 2021.

The government of India had passed a mandate in 2012 for an advanced training institute to be established in Arunachal Pradesh, NIMAS was found. The institute offers a holistic approach towards adventure sports training across land, air and water.

The institutes offer people to experience a variety of challenges of outdoor surfaces as well as pursue a career in adventure sports.

One of their key goals is to contribute to the local economy through sustainable employment. Over time, there have been a plethora of local people looking forward to working and make NIMAS a success.
