Itanagar: Arunachal Pradesh Animal Husbandry and Veterinary minister Gabriel D Wangsu on Tuesday visited the ICAR-National Research Centre on Pig (ICAR-NRCP) in Guwahati, to explore opportunities for collaboration aimed at advancing pig farming practices in his state.

The visit was centered on ensuring access to high-quality pig breeds, enhancing feed quality, and providing training programs for farmers to improve livestock management.

During his interaction with senior scientists at the institute, Wangsu expressed satisfaction with the advanced research and quality of pig breeds developed at the center. He emphasized the importance of introducing only superior breeds into Arunachal Pradesh to support the state’s efforts in promoting sustainable pig farming.

The minister particularly highlighted the Rani breed piglets, a crossbreed of Hampshire and Ghungroo, as a promising addition to the livestock in the state, an official statement informed here.

Addressing concerns about adulterated feed potentially entering Arunachal Pradesh, Wangsu stressed the need for rigorous feed verification and quality control mechanisms.

“Identifying adulterated feed is critical before distributing it to farmers. Without testing facilities like those available here, it is vital to procure feed from genuine sources to ensure it is fit for both consumption and quality production,” he said.

The minister called on the institute to assist in formulating specific standards for healthy pig feed that can be implemented in the state.

Wangsu also urged ICAR-NRCP to organize training programs for farmers in Arunachal Pradesh, focusing on modern pig farming techniques such as feed management, disease control, and breeding practices.

He noted that empowering farmers with the latest knowledge and skills would significantly enhance productivity and the overall quality of pig farming in the region.

The scientists and board members of ICAR-NRCP provided a detailed overview of the institute’s research activities, achievements, and ongoing projects. They discussed potential collaborations with the Arunachal Pradesh government, including supplying high-quality piglets and sharing expertise in modern pig farming practices.

The minister assured the institute that all necessary administrative procedures for the procurement of piglets and the establishment of collaborations would be expedited upon his return to Arunachal Pradesh.

He emphasized that this partnership would be instrumental in improving livestock farming in the state, contributing to the livelihoods of farmers and the overall development of the region.

The visit marks a significant step in fostering collaboration between Arunachal Pradesh and ICAR-NRCP, with the shared goal of advancing livestock farming and ensuring food security in the state, the statement added.
