SIVASAGAR: Sivasagar witnessed a historic moment on Monday night as the general meeting of the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) appointed Samiran Phukan as the new General Secretary. The announcement was made during the meeting of representatives, leading to celebrations across the district. An air of festivity enveloped as students, organizations, and individuals from various parts of Assam extended their congratulations to the newly elected leader.

Samiran Phukan, who has been associated with AASU since his student days, has received widespread support, with many expressing hope that his leadership will infuse new energy into the organization. This marks a historic achievement for Sivasagar, as it is the first time in three decades that someone from the district has taken on the significant role of General Secretary in AASU.

Phukan was born on September 19, 1989, in Joynagar near Joysagar in Sivasagar. He is the son of retired vice principal Taraprasanna Phukan and retired headmistress Anjali Baruah Phukan. His involvement with AASU began in 2005, during his student days, when he formed a primary unit in Joysagar and served as its General Secretary.

While studying in Class 11, Phukan was elected General Secretary of Sivasagar Government Higher Secondary School in 2005-06. He continued to actively participate in student politics throughout his college years, being elected General Secretary of the Sibsagar College Students’ Union for two consecutive terms (2007-08 and 2008-09) and later as Vice President in 2009-10, setting a record for winning student elections for three consecutive terms.

Phukan’s leadership journey continued as he was elected General Secretary of the Sivasagar Regional Students’ Union in 2010, serving until 2014. He then took on the role of President until January 2016. Subsequently, he became General Secretary of the All Sivasagar District Students’ Union, a position he held for two terms from January 2016 to October 2020.

In November 2020, Phukan was elected to the central executive committee of AASU at its 17th Duliajan Session. He served as Assistant General Secretary from September 2022 until November 2023, before being elected as the General Secretary at AASU’s 18th Morigaon Session.
