AAU VC announces ambitious plans of Rs 100 crore for the university

Jorhat: The Vice-Chancellor of Assam Agriculture University (AAU), Bidyut Chandan Deka announced an ambitious plan of generating Rs 100 crore revenue in the next five years for the university. He announced the plan on Friday. The plan will further help in the holistic development and transformation of the rural economy of the state.

VC Deka announced the same during his annual New Year's address at the MC Das Memorial auditorium in the university campus. His 17-point action plan, which would unravel over 25 years was shared during his annual speech.

His vision includes setting up of a market-related database, production of seeds, an online exam centre and so on. It also includes the adoption of a cluster of villages under 'Our Village, Our Pride' programme by teams of teachers, which will remove the criticism that scientists were not directly involved with farmers.

VC Deka said that around 150 teams with 5 teachers each will be formed, who would adopt a cluster of four to five villages. They will study these villages in detail and connect with the designated departments for intervention in different areas.

The VC said, "For the programme to go on stream, the state has agreed on principle to give more than Rs 14 crore over a five year period, the first year would require about Rs 2.4 crore and 10 per cent annual increment thereafter totalling more than Rs 14 crore in five years."

The whole programme is to make the teachers go into a direct mode and in turn, they can also learn from the farmers and base their research on this.

"In each cluster at least 15-20 youths would be identified and mentored to be entrepreneurs. They would motivate the villagers to help in transforming the village economy," he further said.

Speaking about the data base, the VC said that it would help the farmers in finding out the prices of products in the district, state, region and the country. The data would be based on demand and supply. These data will be saved in aa portal, which can be accessed by the farmers free of cost. Revenue would also be earned by supplying seeds and planting material of different crops in bulk. The Centre would buy seeds developed by the university.

The online exam centre would be like the one present in ICAR IN New Delhi. Around 100 computers will be installed on the topmost floor of the AAU central library, which would be outsourced for holding competitive exams. The university would further benefit from the rental of computers.

With these, various other plans are to be taken up by the university.
