BOKAKHAT: Following the Central Government’s directive to identify illegal Bangladeshi nationals across the country within a set deadline, Assam Police have intensified their operations, resulting in the apprehension of numerous suspected Bangladeshis. In Golaghat district, including the Numaligarh area, 22 individuals were detained on Sunday and another 29 on Monday for questioning as suspected Bangladeshi nationals.
Police picked up the suspects from among labourers working in various companies under the Numaligarh Refinery. The arrests have significantly impacted the refinery’s workforce. According to reports, the police carried out operations in places like Merapani, Forest Block, Islampur, and Gomari in the district, detaining many individuals suspected of being foreign nationals.
The detained suspects have been brought to the Golaghat Superintendent of Police’s office since Sunday for interrogation. Their documents are being thoroughly verified. As a result of the police’s sudden crackdown, many relatives of the detained individuals gathered at police stations, asserting that their family members possess valid documents and are not foreigners under any circumstance.
So far, police have not released any official details regarding the background of the suspected individuals, most of whom were reportedly engaged as labourers in different parts of the district.
