Silchar: Barak Democratic Front (BDF) had strongly condemned the decision of Air Indian suspending its operations from Silchar from June 1. In a press statement, the BDF said, despite having established itself over the past several decades as one of the most reliable flight services for air travelers in Barak Valley, Air India’s sudden decision to suspend its Silchar-Kolkata flight service from June 1 is deeply unfortunate. The BDF had demanded an immediate review and withdrawal of this decision. The Air India had decided to suspend all its flights operations to and from Silchar airport from June 1. The last flight is scheduled on May 31. In 1955, the then Indian Airlines first connected Silchar to the other parts of the country. Passengers now had to rely only on private carriers like IndiGo and Alliance Air.
Reliable sources indicates that employees stationed at Silchar airport would be relocated. The exact reason behind the decision was yet to be officially explained. However another source hinted that from next September the Tata group-run airliner would start ‘Air India Express’ flight service from Silchar.
The BDF in its release said, for critically-ill patients and even the transportation of mortal remains, this flight had been a vital lifeline for the residents of Barak. The abrupt discontinuation of this service would create immense difficulties for the passengers. A sharp rise in ticket prices of the remaining two services operated by IndiGo and Alliance Air was also feared.
