TANGLA: A month-long free residential training program on apiculture and allied skills commenced today at BR Brahma Hotel and Restaurant in Udalguri. The initiative aims to promote self-employment among villagers by utilizing natural resources sustainably. The event has been organized by the Assam Science and Technology and Environment Council (ASTEC) under the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change (MoEFCC) and the training conducted by EIACP PC Hub, Assam, with support from the Green Environment Task Force. The program, which began on January 25, will conclude on February 23 with a valedictory ceremony, informed ASTEC coordinator Devajit Borah. The inaugural session witnessed the participation of prominent speakers, including Dr Manisha Sharma of ASTEC, Chairman of the Udalguri Municipality Board, Rakesh Boro; social activists Kulen Borah from Rowta and Rewati Raman Sapkota from Udalguri. The speakers encouraged participants to leverage the government-supported initiative to transform their lifestyles and create employment opportunities.
During the training, participants will learn techniques for wild beekeeping, scientific honey extraction, honey product marketing, and vermicompost production. At the end of the program, trainees will receive free beekeeping boxes and related kits. A growing number of youths from villages in the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) have already adopted wild beekeeping as a supplementary profession, reflecting the increasing popularity of apiculture in the region. Similar training programs are also being conducted for village youths in the Raimona forest area of Kokrajhar, further expanding the reach of this eco-friendly initiative. The event highlights the potential of apiculture in providing sustainable livelihoods, marking a significant step towards rural development and paving way for self-reliance of youths.
