DIBRUGARH: Bir Lachit Sena’s administrative secretary, Shrinkhal Chaliha, was released late Friday evening after being detained for nearly nine hours at the Dibrugarh SP office. Earlier in the day, Chaliha was taken into custody while on his way to Duliajan to participate in a 12-hour bandh called by his organization.
According to police sources, Chaliha was detained as a preventive measure to maintain law and order during the bandh. He was held at the office of the Superintendent of Police in Dibrugarh. His detention sparked reactions from supporters, political groups, and civil society organizations across the region.
However, authorities confirmed that Chaliha would be officially released at the Dibrugarh-Sivasagar border. He was escorted from the SP office by police personnel and taken in a police vehicle before his release. Supporters gathered in anticipation of his release, raising slogans and demanding answers from the administration.
While the police have defended their action as a necessary step to prevent unrest, the incident has reignited debate over the right to protest and the use of preventive detention laws in Assam.
Chaliha’s release is likely to strengthen the ongoing movement led by the Bir Lachit Sena, as well as raise questions about the state’s approach to handling political demonstrations.
