Assam: BTC chief Hagrama Mohilary reviews grim flood situation in Nazira

NAZIRA: Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) chief Hagrama Mohilary visited Nazira to assess the recent flood situation in Upper Assam. Although he was initially scheduled to visit the severely affected Nepali Khuti area in Bihubar, he could not proceed due to the muddy and inaccessible condition of the region. Instead, he visited the Nazira Co-District Commissioner's office.

At the commissioner's office, Mohilary held discussions with Nazira MLA Mayur Borgohain and district officials regarding the prevailing flood crisis. Speaking to reporters afterwards, Mohilary stated that he had come to personally review the affected areas.

"I first visited two flood-affected spots in Sivasagar. The situation is very bad. Among all the affected areas, Nazira constituency appears to be the worst hit," he said. He added that although he had planned to visit Nepali Khuti, reports of extremely poor road conditions prevented the visit.

Mohilary acknowledged that the people of Nazira are facing severe hardships. He praised the efforts of the local MLA, stating that assistance is being provided to the extent possible. He also mentioned that while there may be slight delays in permanent rehabilitation, affected families will receive support from the government.

According to him, essential relief materials such as food supplies are being distributed, and no major complaints have been reported from the public so far. However, he emphasised that the primary concern remains long-term rehabilitation, as many homes have been destroyed.

"The assessment process is still ongoing. Surveys need to be conducted in agriculture, housing, and the veterinary sector. Once these are completed, both the Government of India and the Government of Assam will take necessary steps for proper rehabilitation," he said.

Mohilary further assured that despite being a smaller administrative body, the BTC Government would also extend assistance.
