MANGALDAI: A good number of students of Jawahar Novodaya Vidyalaya, Udalguri showed their keen interest to pursue their future in the field of journalism and mass communication. Nearly two hundred students from class IX to XI standards of the residential school on Saturday attended a career guidance and counselling session where senior journalist Mayukh Goswami took part as the guest speaker.
Taking part in the session, Mayukh Goswami, in his deliberation, delved into many relevant topics from the power of journalism and mass com, its evolution in India, top institutes offering courses in journalism and mass communication, advertising, public relations, film studies, digital media, etc. He discussed key skills like strong communication, critical thinking and analytical skills, research and investigation, technical proficiency, ethics, and objectivity. Diverse career prospects, future of journalism and mass com, its challenges including fake news and misinformation, job security, financial stability, political pressure, etc. were also highlighted during the course of the presentation. He also shared some interesting field stories which he had experienced during his long journalistic career.
This was followed by an interactive session where the speaker replied to questions from the students which included queries on growing threats to freedom of press, role of the fourth pillar, regulations over the unethical practices in digital media, and others.
The whole session, which was a part of the school’s ongoing project ‘Innovation,’ ended with the vote of thanks offered by senior faculty Naresh Upadhyay. Earlier in the beginning, Rana Pratap Nandi, Coordinator of the project, explained the purpose of the project while Principal of the school Rajinder Kumar delivered the welcome address before the welcome song presented by the students’ choir group.
