GUWAHATI: The Assam Pradesh Congress is likely to break its alliance with the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF).

According to reports, in its meeting on August 30, the Congress party is said to break its alliance.

Earlier taking a dig at the Congress party, former Congress leader from Silchar Sushmita Dev said that the Congress went into an alliance with the AIUDF and now after the result, the AIUDF and Congress MLAs are praising the chief minister.

"Why did we undertake such a sacrifice? It was all with the aim of defeating the BJP. It was an ideological battle. But if all of them praise the CM in one voice now, where is the opposition space?" Sushmita Dev added.

Before the Assam Assembly polls, the former Silchar MP had openly voiced her reservation with the Congress's seat-sharing agreement with the AIUDF, especially in the Barak valley. "My personal view was that we may have lost, but it was still possible to turn the party around unlike the situation now when we are in alliance," she said.

After severing her three-decade-long association with the Congress last week, Sushmita Dev said there was no better alternative than Mamata Banerjee to take on the BJP today.

"It is obvious that Mamata di has not brought me in for a seat in Bengal. It is an extraordinary move and it shows how serious the TMC is about the North East," Sushmita Dev said.
