DHEKIAJULI: The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) launched its campaign at an election rally held at Bapuji Bhawan in Thelamara, under the Borsola constituency, on Sunday. Leading the charge, APCC President Bhupen Kumar Borah accused the BJP of catastrophic failure in controlling inflation, addressing unemployment, and maintaining clean governance.

Addressing a large gathering at noon, Borah asserted that true rural development is impossible without a robust Panchayati Raj system, which Congress has always championed. “Without empowering Panchayats, villages cannot progress. Congress believes in taking every community forward, irrespective of caste or religion,” Borah said, urging voters to strengthen Congress’s hand in the upcoming polls for a prosperous future.

Borah did not hold back in his criticism of the BJP, branding the party as a ‘group of deceivers’ who indulge in divisive politics in the name of caste and religion. He lambasted BJP leaders as ‘mere actors’ who mislead the public with hollow promises, particularly highlighting their unfulfilled assurance of granting Scheduled Tribe (ST) status to indigenous communities.

He further alleged that the BJP government has systematically betrayed Anganwadi workers and the tribal population, accusing it of fostering widespread discontent and disillusionment across Assam.

Taking a sharper aim at Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma, Borah alleged massive increases in the wealth of Sarma’s family during his tenure. “Corruption and syndicate raj have become the norm, while the Chief Minister conveniently maintains a silence,” he remarked. Borah declared that if Congress forms the government in 2026, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) would be constituted to thoroughly investigate the Chief Minister’s family’s amassed assets and other acts of alleged corruption during BJP rule.

In an impassioned appeal, Borah called upon voters to extend their support to Congress candidates Dibyajyoti Nath (Bihaguri Zilla Parishad), Anjali Swargiyari (Borgang Zilla Parishad), Natasha Khora (Missamari Zilla Parishad), and Victor Lakra (Thelamara Zilla Parishad), emphasizing their commitment to grassroots development and transparent governance. Presiding over the meeting, Thelamara Block Congress Committee President Champa Brahma reiterated Congress’s vision for rural empowerment.

Speaking on the occasion, All India Congress Committee (AICC) Secretary Manoj Chauhan underscored Congress’s historic role in introducing the Panchayati Raj system under the leadership of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru in 1959. “Only Congress can ensure the survival and strengthening of Panchayati Raj institutions. BJP attempted to undermine Panchayat elections in Assam but had to succumb to public pressure led by Congress,” Chauhan stated.

Further sharpening the attack, Assam Pradesh Mahila Congress President Mira Barthakur accused the BJP government of turning Assam’s vibrant workforce into dependent beneficiaries. She described Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma as a ‘man of many faces’, attempting to sow communal discord for political gains. Barthakur passionately urged the electorate to reject divisive forces and embrace unity and development.

The meeting also witnessed an address by Sonitpur District Congress Committee President Dadul Barkataki, who rallied support for the Congress candidates.
