Assam: Death anniversary of Hemchandra Barua observed in Sivasagar

Sivasagar commemorated the 129th death anniversary of Hemchandra Barua, the revered ‘Bhaxar Oja’ and compiler of Hemkosh.

SIVASAGAR: The 129th death anniversary of Hemchandra Barua, renowned as the ‘Bhaxar Oja,’ compiler of the Hemkosh dictionary, progressive thinker, social reformer and former president of the Axam Xahitya Xabha, was commemorated today in Sivasagar.

The event was organized by the socio-cultural organization Alok Sangha at Nikunjalata Chaliha Smriti Sishu Vidyalaya in Amolapatty, Sivasagar. The memorial programme was presided over by educationist Jyotiprasad Dutta. In his address, Dutta emphasized that Hemchandra Barua played a crucial role in steering the Assamese language towards a modern, universal outlook and connecting it to the global stage.

The event began with an introductory speech by senior journalist Pranjal Rajguru, who provided context on the significance of Hemchandra Barua’s life and work. He highlighted how Barua’s writings and dictionary laid a foundation for Assamese identity and linguistic integrity.

Among the notable participants were educators Ratnamoni Sharma, Gunin Sharma, Bubul Mahanta, Satya Bezbaruah, lyricist and writer Karunabha Dutta, Hema Kakoti, prominent poet Dr Mridul Gogoi, Bina Goswami, Asima Baruah, Nabiur Rahman, and Shailen Gayan.
