DIBRUGARH: The Dibrugarh University Teachers' Association (DUTA) elected its new executive for the 2025-26 term following elections held on March 17. The election process was conducted under the supervision of Prof Kalyan Bhuyan of the Department of Physics as the Returning Officer.
The newly-elected body officially assumed charge on March 28, during the Association's General Body Meeting, taking over from outgoing President Prof Neeta Kalita Barua and General Secretary Prof Pankaj Dutta, ensuring a smooth transition.
Elections were held for the posts of General Secretary and Joint Secretaries. For the post of General Secretary, the election was held between Dr Borun Dey and Dr Pranjal Protim Buragohain, which Dr Dey won. The posts of Joint Secretaries were contested among three candidates: Dr Kuldeep Goswami (Statistics), Dr Jitu Borah (Assamese), and Dr Bulumoni Kalita (Physics). Dr Bulumoni Kalita and Dr Jitu Borah were declared elected.
Several key office bearers were elected unopposed, including Prof Devid Kardong (Life Sciences) as President, Prof Aparoop Das (Pharmaceutical Sciences) as Vice-President, and Dr Darpanjit Konwar (Assamese) as Treasurer. In addition, three executive committee members were elected unopposed: Dr Bikash Deka (Sociology), Dr Kalyanjyoti Deori (Chemistry), and Dr Prithiviraj Khakhlary (Chemistry).
The General Body Meeting approved the filling of the vacant positions based on proposals and seconds from the members. Prof Mridul Bordoloi (English) was approved as Vice-President.
The following members were approved as Executive Members: Prof Dolly Phukan (Political Science), Dr Borkha Mech (Petroleum Technology), Dr Kuheli Das (Sociology), Dr Kakoli Gogoi (History), Dr Dhruba Das (Statistics), and Dr Pranjit Kalita (Applied Geology).
Speaking at the event, Prof Devid Kardong and Dr Borun Dey, the newly-elected President and General Secretary respectively, reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening the association's role in university governance. They stressed the need to protect faculty welfare, enhance academic and administrative transparency, and promote participatory decision-making.
