DIBRUGARH: The Dibrugarh Press Club submitted a memorandum to the Assam Chief Minister to rename the Dibrugarh Airport after Bharat Ratna Bhupen Hazarika, the legendary cultural icon of Assam. The office bearers of Dibrugarh Press Club also handed over the copy of memorandum to Dibrugarh DC.
In a letter addressed to the Chief Minister, DPC President Manash Jyoti Dutta and General Secretary Ripunjoy Das appealed for the renaming to recognize Hazarika’s immense contributions to Assamese culture. Bhupen Hazarika, a towering figure in Indian arts, was posthumously awarded the Bharat Ratna in 2019. His soulful music, poignant lyrics, and cinematic brilliance transcended borders, earning him admirers across the world. Born in Sadiya, Assam, Hazarika’s works often highlighted Assam’s cultural heritage, social issues, and humanism.
Earlier, the Eastern Assam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (EACCI) had submitted a memorandum to CM Himanta Biswa Sarma for renaming Dibrugarh Airport after Bharat Ratna Bhupen Hazarika. Greater Dibrugarh Press Club on Wednesday also submitted a memorandum to the Union Civil Aviation Minister to rename Dibrugarh Airport after Bhupen Hazarika’s name.
