Assam: Forest officials arrest poacher in Behali Wildlife Sanctuary

BISWANATH CHARIALI: In a commendable effort to protect the rich biodiversity of Behali Wildlife Sanctuary (Proposed), the Borgang Range under Sonitpur East Forest Division successfully arrested a poacher during a routine night patrol on Monday in the Dikal area of the sanctuary.

The apprehended individual has been identified as Sri Nabam Nama (35 years), son of Nabam Takia, a resident of Tarassoo Village, Papum-Pare District, Arunachal Pradesh. A single-barrel firearm and a deer carcass were recovered from his possession, highlighting the seriousness of the offence. Following his arrest, the accused was brought to the Borgang Range Office and subsequently produced before the Honourable Chief Judicial Magistrate, Biswanath Court. He has been remanded to judicial custody in Biswanath district.

Behali Wildlife Sanctuary (P), renowned for its rich flora and fauna, has been under the vigilant protection of the forest department. The Borgang Range has been conducting rigorous day and night patrolling to deter illegal activities, ensuring the safety of the sanctuary’s wildlife and ecosystem.

Speaking on the incident, a senior forest official from Sonitpur East Division commended the patrol team’s bravery and emphasized the department’s zero-tolerance policy toward wildlife crimes. “We are committed to preserving the ecological integrity of Behali Wildlife Sanctuary. Such incidents only strengthen our resolve to protect our natural heritage,” he said.

The sanctuary, which plays a critical role in supporting endangered species and maintaining regional biodiversity, has faced challenges from poaching and illegal activities in the past. The forest department has reaffirmed its commitment to intensifying patrolling, enhancing surveillance, and fostering public awareness to ensure the sanctuary’s long-term protection.
