MANGALDAI: In a groundbreaking move, the Garukhuti Project, a dream initiative of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, has been augmented with an integrated aqua park, a mega fishery project worth Rs. 32.97 crores, funded under the ‘Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana’ (PMMSY). This futuristic park, the first of its kind in the Northeast and one of only ten in India, boasts an impressive array of 69 fishery components. These components are mini public aquarium, fish museum, water sports tank, angling shed, seven sister pavilion, restaurant, re- circulatory aquaculture system, biofloc, fish hatchery, fish feed mill, cold storage, ice plant, fish processing unit, establishment of laboratory, training centre, conference hall, hostel for fish farmers, construction of in- pond- raceway system, market shed for fish, construction of grow out pond, nursery pond, rearing pond, brood stock pond, Indian Cat Fish (Magur) hatchery, indigenous fish (Pabda) hatchery, Kuchia culture unit, pearl farming unit, live feed culture unit etc. for welfare of the public in Darrang district as well as Assam.

Sprawling over 533 bighas of land allotted by the Darrang district administration, this mega project promises to revolutionize the fisheries sector in Assam and beyond.

Union Minister of Fisheries, Government of India,  Rajiv Ranjan Singh on January 6 laid the foundation stone of this mega project virtually in presence of  Minister of state for Fisheries, Government of India, George Kurian and Prof. S.P. Singh Baghel and Minister of Fisheries, Assam, Krishnendu Paul.

Darrang-Udalguri Parliamentarian Dilip Saikia took part in the foundation laying function at Gorukhuti in presence of  Sipajhar legislator Dr. Paramananda Rajbangshi, District Commissioner Parag Kumar Kakaty, Additional District Commissioner Manash Saikia, District Fishery Development Officer Bipul Khataniar, Executive Officer of Gorukhuti Project Uddipta Gautam and a large number of people of the locality.
