Assam: Four arrested for extortion in Udalguri district

TANGLA: In an out of twist turn of events, a government employee has been implicated in an extortion case, exposing links with a newly-floated militant outfit which had targeted several high ranking government officials in Udalguri district. According to reports, Udalguri police after receiving police complaints of extortion and threat by government officials of Bhergaon sub-divisional office apprehended one Gokul Basumatary, a third-grade employee at the Sub-Divisional Officer’s office, who allegedly helped the extortionist group in demanding money from several government offices in the Udalguri district. According to Udalguri Superintendent of Police, Pushkin Jain the newly-floated outfit in the name and style of Liberation Tigers Force of Boroland (LTFB) was led by a history-sheeter Daoharu Boro, a former NDFB cadre, who, along with two accomplices, orchestrated the extortion scheme targeting government offices in the district. Based on a complaint lodged by a government official at the Tangla police station, the Udalguri police and Tangla police launched an investigation into the matter and apprehended  four individuals, Daoharu Boro, Gokul Basumatary, Akhrang Basumatary, and Buddhadev Daimary, in connection with the extortion case. “The arrested individuals are currently in police custody, and further investigation is underway to uncover the full extent of the conspiracy,” added Udalguri SP Pushkin Jain.
