Assam girl felicitated after winning United States University Senate election

GAURISAGAR: Across seven seas, Assam girl Argha Goswami led the world's top-ranking university's student body with her wisdom, intelligence, extraordinary personality, and leadership qualities. Argha Goswami, daughter of Dr. Jayanta Goswami, Additional Secretary of Panchayat and Rural Development (P&RD) of Assam, and Dr. Gayatri Goswami, Associate Professor, Sivasagar University, and resident of Charing Santipar Ratanpur Xatra in Sivasagar, presently staying at Jorhat, has brought laurel to Assam as well as her native village after she was elected as the President of the Senate, University of Rhode Island (URI) in the USA.

Argha Goswami, a student of URI, departments of Computer Engineering, Applied Mathematics, and Computer Science, passed her HSLC examination from Carmel School, Jorhat, in 2018 and HS examination from Pragya Academy in 2020 with flying colours. Later, she joined the University of Rhode Island in the USA for higher studies. She has been involved with student organizations and was initially elected a member of the Senate while studying engineering. Later, she participated in the election of the President of the Senate in 2024. Notably, she was elected as the president of the Senate of the University from among more than 27,000 students from different countries of the world.

The residents of Gaurisagar were delighted over her achievement. On this occasion, a public felicitation meeting was held at Ratanpur Xatra premises on Wednesday under the aegis of Pabitra Bhadmahjora Naam Kirtan Aru Shreemadbhagawat path Porichalona Samiti. The meeting was anchored by former AASU leader Govin Phukan and Biswajit Gogoi. Educationists Muhi Kanta Nath, Girindra Kumar Gogoi, Monmohan Debnath, Dimbeswar Borah, and Jivamoni Nath were present as distinguished guests.

Receiving the public felicitation, Argha Goswami said, "URI embraced me, so I felt I should give back something to the university. As a result, I contested the Senate elections for that purpose." Argha, who is proud to show to the world the rich culture of Assam, the favourite dress of Assamese women-the Mugar Mekhela Chadar-and the one-horned rhino in Kaziranga National Park, said that life can only be meaningful if you put your education and knowledge into practice. Argha, who has written a book of poems and two books of comparative analysis, said that her parents did not diminish the scope of her thoughts.

In her speech, Argha expressed her gratitude to Dr. Dilip Kumar Dutta, former professor of URI, Department of Mathematics, for his valuable advice and cooperation. Argha, who received a $500 Asian Cultural Ambassador Scholarship for her skills, said that while maintaining her own studies, she would also study to understand the problems of the students of the nine colleges under the university and solve them.

In the felicitation meeting, as many as 45 organizations and individuals felicitated Argha with a gamusa, seleng, citation, japi, memento, and a book. Argha and her parents expressed their thankfulness and gratitude to all.
