BOKAKHAT: The daughters and daughters-in-law of Assam are weaving their dreams at the handloom unit of Kamargaon College, fulfilling long-cherished aspirations. The handloom center has now become an academic place for these Assamese women. For the first time in the state, Golaghat district’s Kamargaon College has formally included the art of weaving as a subject in its academic curriculum.
Weaving is now a part of classroom education at the college. This practical education is expected to pave a new path for female students toward self-reliance. In the handloom unit, students are working as traditional weavers, spinning yarn on the spindle and weaving with dedication. Nearly 100 female students of the college have been trained by a skilled local artisan.
Alongside teaching traditional craftsmanship, efforts are being made to develop the students’ skills and provide them with business knowledge to help them become self-sufficient. Already, the handloom unit has come alive through the students’ craftsmanship, producing traditional items such as gamosas, tongalis, handkerchiefs, and chadar-mekhelas.
Situated in the rural area of Golaghat district, Kamargaon College’s initiative is not limited to the classroom and represents an attempt to transform dreams into tangible opportunities for the next generation.
