GOLAGHAT: The Health Department of Golaghat organized a programme to distribute nutritious food packets to a total of 1,683 TB patients in the district at Golaghat Municipality Board Conference Hall today.

The event was organized under the patronage of Numaligarh Refinery and courtesy of Hare Krishna Movement. The National Tuberculosis Control Cell of Golaghat Health Department had applied to Numaligarh Refinery to implement this food basket distribution programme under the CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) programme. In addition to distributing nutritious food to TB patients, felicitation letters were given to the Nishaya Mitras.

The Government of India has been implementing a number of programmes across the country under the TB Free India Programme.

It is to be noted that taking nutritious food along with medicines is very important in this disease as the patient can defeat this disease only if there is enough nutrient level in the body. Getting enough nutrients to boost the body’s immune system is the only way to get rid of TB or tuberculosis sooner. But financially weak patients suffer from this disease for a long time due to lack of nutritious food and eventually die.

The medicines available in government hospitals are free of cost but a financially weak family fails in its efforts to provide nutritious food. In such a situation, an individual or an event/institution can set an example of human service by being a partner in the fight against TUBERCULOSIS by offering a bundle of food items full of nutritious food items as ‘Nikshaya Mitra’. A nikshaya mitra can offer nutritious food worth Rs 1,000 per month for a TB patient for six months.

In the programme, Additional Deputy Commissioner in charge of Health Department James Aind, Joint Director of Health Services Dr Ranjit Bhuiyan, Chief Medical and Health Officer Dr Bharat Phukan, Sub-Divisional Medical and Health Officer Dr Ranjit Hazarika, Mataji Nabaneeta Barua of Hare Krishna Movement, Dr Utpal Baruah, Dr Robin Tamuli, NGOs associated with social welfare, National Health Mission, Golaghat unit officials, officials of TB department, staff, ASHA workers, etc. were present.
