SILCHAR: Unfurling the national tricolour at Police Parade Ground here on the occasion of the 74th Republic Day here on Thursday, minister Nandita Garlosa remembered the freedom fighters of Assam along with the national leaders.

Garlosa, who spoke in Bengali, paid tribute to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Bipin Chandra Pal, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Lala Lajpat Roy as well as Ullaskar Dutta, Arun Kumar Chand, Shyamacharan Dev of Barak Valley and Maniram Baruah, PiyaliPhukan, Kanklata Baruah, Kushal Kowar as well as Dimasa freedom fighter ShambudhanPhonglo.

Highlighting the activities of the State Government ,Gorlosa said, "Himanta Biswa Sarma's government is keen on overall development of Barak Valley. As a result of the tireless efforts of the Chief Minister, every region in the State is witnessing remarkable progress. Progressive and positive changes have taken place in the home and as well as in political departments also."

Gorlosa further said, for the first time since independence, a state Cabinet meeting was held here in Silchar. Apart from the cabinet meeting, all the ministers of the state have visited Cachar district at some point or the other.

"A special and important project has been taken up in Cachar district this time. Last year's unprecedented floods taught us many things, and also gave us many cautionary messages. So, the State Government has also included Silchar among the four spoon city projects. Special measures will be taken to retain rain water in this project. Then on the one hand, it will get rid of the artificial floods that are created in the city during the rains. Besides, it will help in water supply projects and nature-environment conservation," the minister said.

"Four sites have been identified for this project in Silchar town. One of these will be selected and DPR will be generated. There, the Ministry of Urban Development will construct a spoon-like reservoir at a cost of Rs 100 crore covering an area of 30 hectares. For that, an Australian-based consulting firm has started preliminary work," the minister added.

Gorlosa said that Cachar had ranked second last year in the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development's activities, particularly in the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana. Around 3,716 houses were completed in this scheme last year. Apart from this, the first instalment of construction of 5,522 houses had been paid and 4,980 houses received the second tranche. The Ministry of Housing and Urban Development is widening the road on both sides of Rangirkhal and constructing strong guard walls. The existing culvert near Sanjay Market is being widened and Rs 48.95 lakh have been allocated for that. A fund of Rs 46.10 crore has been allocated for construction of a box cell culvert at India Club Point. Site clearance of both works is currently underway.

Talking about the revenue collection the Minister said that the revenue collection of the transport department in the district is increasing at a significant rate every year. In the nine months till last December, the transport department in the district had collected a total revenue of Rs 39.62 crore. Compared to the same period last year, it is Rs 10 crore more than the previous year.

The minister also said that the PWD Building Division had constructed a Model Degree College at Borkhola at a cost of Rs 9 crore. Construction of two ICUs in Silchar Medical College Hospital, construction of waiting hall for attendants, retaining wall and external drain in Mother and Child Hospital, construction of medical oxygen gas pipeline system had been completed at Silchar BSC Nursing College.Besides, two oxygen generation plants with a capacity of 1000 LMP have been constructed with PMCARE funds. The people of Barak, including the neighbouring states have benefitted from the cath lab in Silchar Medical College and Hospital. The construction work of cancer hospital is going on. The construction work will be completed in the next six months, said the minister.
