GUWAHATI: In a major initiative towards an air pollution-free city, the Assam government is all set for making plans for the implementation of electric buses to run in the state's major urban centre Guwahati.

On Thursday 24 February the Chief Minister of Assam Himanta Biswa Sarma informed that the state government will be soon placing orders for a total number of 200 electric buses to operate in Guwahati.

The proposed initiative of ordering 200 electric buses is assumed to be implemented within the period of one month as informed by the chief minister.

The decision for the availability of 200 electric buses and 100 CNG buses for Assam's Guwahati metropolis was first taken by the Assam Cabinet in 2021.

Now the latest development regarding the initiative comes in line with the global campaign to reduce and diminish the carbon emission affecting the environment.

The Chief Minister Sarma informed about the decision while releasing the party's (BJP) manifesto for the upcoming municipal election in the state.

He said that the government under his rule will introduce emission-free transport facilities for the citizens in major urban centres of Assam.

CM Sarma further stated that Carbon emission is a worldwide issue and through this step of bringing electric buses in the city, the government aims to minimize carbon emission.

He also said that if BJP comes into power after the elections then electric commercial vehicles will also be introduced in smaller towns across the state.

The transformation of buses into electric modes of public transportation will be beneficial for the people and also for the environment.

On speaking about the manifesto the CM said that BJP promises clean water facilities in households of urban regions and also vowed for the implementation of the scientific waste management system.

Meanwhile, the campaigning for the upcoming municipal election is going on at full speed and the elections to 80 civic bodies in the state consisting of a total of 977 wards are scheduled to be held on 6th March 2022.

The counting of the votes will take place on the same day of the election as informed by the state election commission. Notably, this is the first time that polling will be done using EVMs (Electronic voting machines).
